In English: umlaut (ä, ö, ü)

The two dots on ä, ö, ü, which change the sound of the vowel. An umlaut often appears when a word changes form: in many plurals, in the comparative and in some verb forms.

Example: der Apfel, die Äpfel; alt, älter; ich fahre, du fährst
