You know the regular endings: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en. A group of very common verbs uses these same endings but also changes the vowel of the stem in two forms. English does something similar in „I say, he says“ (the vowel sounds different). These verbs are used all the time (to speak, to eat, to read, to drive, to sleep), so they are worth learning well.

The vowel changes with du and er/sie/es only

The change happens in exactly two forms: du and er/sie/es. The forms for ich, wir, ihr and sie/Sie keep the vowel of the infinitive. There are four patterns: e to i (sprechen: du sprichst, er spricht), e to ie (sehen: du siehst, sie sieht), a to ä (fahren: du fährst, er fährt) and au to äu (laufen: du läufst, sie läuft). The endings stay regular.

Stem changes in sentences

  • Ich spreche Deutsch und Lena spricht Englisch.I speak German and Lena speaks English.ich keeps e; Lena (sie) takes i
  • Du isst eine Banane. You are eating a banana.the stem ess- ends in s, so du adds only -t
  • Paul liest die Zeitung.Paul is reading the newspaper.e to ie
  • Frau Huber fährt morgen nach München.Mrs. Huber is going to Munich tomorrow.a to ä
  • Das Baby schläft.The baby is sleeping.a to ä
  • Ihr fahrt nach Köln und wir laufen nach Hause. You (all) are driving to Cologne and we are walking home.no change with ihr and wir

Not every verb with e or a changes

There is no rule that tells you which verbs change: you learn it with each verb. Regular verbs such as machen, kaufen, leben, gehen and kommen keep their vowel: du machst, er kauft, sie geht. A good dictionary shows the er form of every stem-changing verb, for example „fahren (fährt)“. Also note the spelling when the stem ends in s: du isst and du liest add only -t, so du and er/sie/es look the same.

Three special verbs: nehmen, werden, wissen

Nehmen (to take) changes e to i and also changes its spelling: du nimmst, er nimmt (no h, double m). Werden (to become, to get) has the short forms du wirst and er wird, with a d and no -t ending. Wissen (to know a fact) is different from all the others: the whole singular changes to weiß, and the ich and er/sie/es forms have no ending: ich weiß, du weißt, er weiß.

  • Marie wird Ärztin.Marie is going to be a doctor.werden + profession, no article
  • Es wird kalt.It is getting cold.werden + adjective = to get, to become
  • Ich weiß das.I know that.no ending with ich
  • Tom weiß die Antwort.Tom knows the answer.no -t with er/sie/es
Tip

Learn each of these verbs as a pair: infinitive plus er form. Say fahren, er fährt; lesen, er liest; nehmen, er nimmt. If you know the er form, you know the du form too, because they always share the same vowel: er fährt, du fährst.

Watch out

The most common mistake is to change too much. ihr never takes the new vowel: ihr fahrt, ihr sprecht, ihr seht (not ihr fährt). The same is true for wir and sie/Sie: wir fahren. The opposite mistake is to forget the change: say er spricht and du siehst, not er sprecht or du sehst. Finally, ich weiß and er weiß have no ending: never ich weiße or er weißt.
