One of nine prepositions (in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen) that take the accusative for movement toward a place (wohin?) and the dative for a position (wo?).
Example: Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.
