Turning a verb or an adjective into a noun: ankommen becomes die Ankunft, lesen becomes das Lesen, schön becomes die Schönheit. The new noun is capitalized, and what was the subject or object usually becomes a genitive or a phrase with von.

Example: Die Ankunft des Zuges verzögert sich. (= Der Zug kommt später an.)
