Konjunktiv I in the press and unreal comparisons with als ob

Read and write news-style reported speech with the Konjunktiv I, build unreal comparisons with als ob and als, and recognize the fixed Konjunktiv I expressions of educated German.

The Konjunktiv · Advanced · 30 min · 40 exercises · Goethe C1, College

You met the Konjunktiv I at B2 for indirect speech. This lesson takes it to press level and adds two things every advanced reader needs: unreal comparisons (Er tut so, als ob er nichts wüsste), where German, unlike everyday English, insists on a special verb form, and a handful of fixed Konjunktiv I expressions such as es sei denn and wie dem auch sei.

Konjunktiv I in news writing

A journalist uses the Konjunktiv I to show that a statement is someone else's, without confirming or doubting it. No dass is needed; the Konjunktiv alone marks the report, even over several sentences. The forms are built on the infinitive stem + e: er habe, sie komme, es gebe, er könne, sie wisse; sein is irregular: sei, seien. There are only three time levels. Same time: sei, habe, komme. Earlier (one form for Präteritum, Perfekt and Plusquamperfekt): sei gewesen, habe gesagt. Later: werde kommen. Unlike English, German does not shift tenses: “He said he was ill” is Er sagte, er sei krank.

From direct speech to news style

Direct speechReported in the pressTime level
„Ich bin zufrieden.“Sie sagte, sie sei zufrieden.same time

„Ich habe davon nichts gewusst.“Er erklärte, er habe davon nichts gewusst.earlier
„Ich werde kommen.“Sie versicherte, sie werde kommen.later
„Das Gesetz wird geändert.“Es hieß, das Gesetz werde geändert.same time, passive
„Wir haben keine Zeit.“Sie sagten, sie hätten keine Zeit.replacement by Konjunktiv II
„Die Preise steigen.“Er sagte, die Preise stiegen (würden steigen).replacement by Konjunktiv II

The replacement rule

When the Konjunktiv I looks exactly like the indicative, it cannot signal anything, so the Konjunktiv II (or würde + infinitive) replaces it. This happens mainly with ich, wir and sie (plural): sie haben becomes sie hätten, sie kommen becomes sie kämen or würden kommen, sie wissen becomes sie wüssten. The third person singular is always distinct (er habe, er komme), and sein is distinct in every person (sie seien), so no replacement is needed there.

Unreal comparisons: als ob, als wenn, als

After verbs of appearance and behavior (so tun, aussehen, scheinen, wirken, klingen, sich anfühlen, sich benehmen), a comparison with something that is not really the case takes the Konjunktiv. Two word orders exist. With als ob (or the rarer als wenn), the verb goes to the end: Er tut so, als ob er nichts wüsste. With als alone, the conjugated verb follows immediately: Er tut so, als wüsste er nichts. The Konjunktiv II is preferred: present wüsste, wäre, hätte, würde + infinitive; past hätte gehört, wäre gewesen. The Konjunktiv I is possible in formal writing: als ob er krank sei.

als ob or als alone?

als ob / als wenn

  • verb at the end
  • Er tut so, als ob er nichts wüsste.
  • ..., als ob sie nichts gehört hätte.

als alone

  • verb right after als
  • Er tut so, als wüsste er nichts.
  • ..., als hätte sie nichts gehört.

The patterns of the unreal comparison

PatternExampleEnglish
als ob + verb at the endEr tut so, als ob er nichts wüsste. He acts as if he knew nothing.
als wenn + verb at the endEr tut so, als wenn er nichts wüsste. He acts as if he knew nothing.
als + verb + subjectEr tut so, als wüsste er nichts. He acts as if he knew nothing.
past with als obSie schwieg, als ob sie nichts gehört hätte. She kept silent as if she had heard nothing.
past with alsSie schwieg, als hätte sie nichts gehört.She kept silent as if she had heard nothing.
Konjunktiv I (formal)Es scheint, als sei das Problem gelöst.It seems as if the problem were solved.

Examples

  • Der Sprecher erklärte, das Unternehmen habe von den Mängeln nichts gewusst. The spokesman stated that the company had known nothing about the defects.earlier than the statement: habe + Partizip II
  • Die Direktorin betonte, die Verhandlungen seien noch nicht abgeschlossen. The director stressed that the negotiations were not yet concluded.seien is distinct from sind, so no replacement
  • Es sieht so aus, als würde es gleich regnen. It looks as if it is about to rain.würde + infinitive replaces the rare form regnete
  • Sie redet, als hätte sie jahrelang in Wien gelebt. She talks as if she had lived in Vienna for years.als alone: the verb comes right after it
  • Mir war, als wäre die Zeit stehen geblieben. It felt to me as if time had stood still.past Konjunktiv II with sein
  • Er benahm sich, als ob nichts geschehen wäre.He behaved as if nothing had happened.als ob: the verb goes to the end

Fixed Konjunktiv I expressions

ExpressionMeaningExample
es sei denn, ...unlessWir wandern morgen, es sei denn, es regnet.
sei es ..., sei es ...whether ... or ...Sei es im Beruf, sei es im Studium: Fremdsprachen sind unverzichtbar.
wie dem auch seibe that as it mayWie dem auch sei, wir müssen heute eine Lösung finden.
man nehme ...take ... (recipes, instructions)Man nehme 200 Gramm Mehl und zwei Eier.
es lebe ...long live ...Es lebe die Freiheit!
komme, was wollecome what mayWir halten an dem Plan fest, komme, was wolle.
Tip

Think of als + verb as als ob with the ob removed: when ob disappears, the verb jumps into its place, just as the verb jumps to the front when you drop wenn (Hätte ich Zeit, ...). When you read the news, treat every sei, habe and werde as an invisible quotation mark: the journalist is quoting, not asserting. The fixed expressions are simply vocabulary: learn them whole.

Watch out

Three traps. (1) Word order: after als alone, the verb must come at once. Als er wüsste nichts is wrong; write als wüsste er nichts or als ob er nichts wüsste. (2) Als with the verb at the end is not a comparison at all: Als er nichts wusste means “when he knew nothing”. (3) In writing, do not use the indicative after als ob (als ob er nichts weiß is colloquial), and do not shift the tense in reported speech as English does: use sei for the same time, sei gewesen only for something earlier.
