Konjunktiv II: würde, wäre, hätte, könnte

Use the Konjunktiv II to be polite, to give advice, to make wishes and to talk about things that are not real: the German way to say would, could and were.

Konjunktiv II · Intermediate · 25 min · 40 exercises · Goethe B1, AP German, High school, College

„If I were rich, I would travel.“ „Could you help me?“ „I would like a tea.“ English uses would, could and were to leave reality behind or to sound polite. German does the same with a special verb mood, the Konjunktiv II. It is one of the most useful tools at B1: without it, your requests sound like orders.

Most verbs: würde + infinitive

For almost every verb you simply use würde (would) in position 2 and the infinitive at the end: Ich würde gern in Berlin wohnen (I would like to live in Berlin). Würde is conjugated like this: ich würde, du würdest, er/sie/es würde, wir würden, ihr würdet, sie/Sie würden.

How the own forms are built, and when to use them

Start from the Präteritum, add an umlaut to a, o or u, and use the endings -e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en: war, wäre; hatte, hätte; konnte, könnte. Only sollte and wollte take no umlaut. Always use the own forms of sein, haben, the modal verbs and wissen: say ich wäre, ich hätte, ich könnte, not ich würde sein or ich würde haben. Forms like käme, ginge and gäbe are common in writing; in speech würde kommen and würde gehen are just as correct. The fixed phrase es gäbe (there would be) is worth learning.

The four uses

1. Polite requests: Könnten Sie mir helfen? Würden Sie bitte das Fenster öffnen? Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. 2. Wishes, often with doch or nur and the verb at the end: Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte! 3. Advice: An deiner Stelle würde ich mehr schlafen. Du solltest zum Arzt gehen. 4. Unreal conditions in the present: Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen (but I am not rich).

The Konjunktiv II in everyday life

  • Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?Could you help me, please?polite request, more polite than Können Sie
  • Ich hätte gern einen Tee mit Zitrone.I would like a tea with lemon.hätte gern: the polite way to order
  • Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte! If only I had more time!wish: verb at the end, with doch
  • An deiner Stelle würde ich mit der Lehrerin sprechen. If I were you, I would talk to the teacher.advice: an deiner Stelle = in your place
  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich um die Welt reisen. If I were rich, I would travel around the world.unreal condition
  • Wenn es einen direkten Zug gäbe, wären wir schneller in Bern.If there were a direct train, we would be in Bern faster.es gäbe = there would be

Unreal wenn-sentences: Konjunktiv II in both halves

In the wenn-clause the verb goes to the end; the main clause that follows starts with its verb: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dich besuchen. You can also turn the sentence around: Ich würde dich besuchen, wenn ich Zeit hätte. Unlike English, German puts the Konjunktiv II in both clauses. Compare the real condition, with the present tense: Wenn ich Zeit habe, besuche ich dich (maybe I will have time).

Real or unreal condition?

Real: present tense

  • it may happen
  • Wenn ich Zeit habe, besuche ich dich.

Unreal: Konjunktiv II twice

  • it is not the case
  • Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dich besuchen.
Tip

Listen for the two dots. The umlaut is often the only difference between a real past and an unreal idea: ich hatte (I had) and ich hätte (I would have), ich konnte (I was able to) and ich könnte (I could), ich wurde (I became) and ich würde (I would). The ich form and the er/sie/es form are always identical: ich wäre, er wäre.

Watch out

English uses the simple past after if (If I had time...), so English speakers write Wenn ich Zeit hatte. In German that is a real past (whenever I had time). For something unreal you need the umlaut: Wenn ich Zeit hätte. Also avoid würde with sein and haben: say wäre and hätte. The past of the Konjunktiv II (Ich hätte es gemacht, I would have done it) comes at B2.
