In English: front field (position 1)
The slot before the conjugated verb in a main clause. It holds exactly one element: the subject, a time or place expression, an object, or even a whole subordinate clause. What you put there is the starting point or the emphasis of the sentence.
Example: Nach dem Unterricht gehen wir in die Mensa.
