Sentence
das Subjekt
In English: subject
The person or thing that does the action. It is always in the nominative, and the verb agrees with it. In German the subject does not have to come first: you recognize it by its case, not by its position.
Example: Heute kocht mein Vater. (Today my father is cooking.)
