das Präfix

In English: prefix

A part added to the front of a word to change its meaning. With verbs, a stressed prefix such as an-, auf-, mit- separates and goes to the end of the clause, while an unstressed one such as be-, ver-, er- never separates.

Example: Der Zug kommt um acht Uhr an. Ich bekomme einen Brief.
