Passive substitutes and the gerundive: sein + zu, sich lassen, -bar

Learn the elegant alternatives to the passive that formal German prefers (ist zu lösen, lässt sich lösen, lösbar) and the gerundive (das zu lösende Problem), and practice moving from one form to another.

The passive · Advanced · 30 min · 40 exercises · Goethe C1, College

A passive with a modal verb is correct but heavy: Das Problem kann nicht gelöst werden. Written German, especially in administration, science and the press, likes shorter forms that say the same thing: Das Problem ist nicht zu lösen. Das Problem lässt sich nicht lösen. Das Problem ist nicht lösbar. These passive substitutes (Passiversatzformen) are active in form and passive in meaning. English knows the idea from The form is to be completed in ink and from adjectives in -able.

sein + zu + infinitive

Sein + zu + infinitive replaces a passive with müssen or können. Die Aufgabe ist zu lösen = Die Aufgabe muss (or kann) gelöst werden. The context decides: in rules, instructions and deadlines it means must (Der Antrag ist bis Freitag einzureichen); with words like leicht, schwer, kaum, nicht it means can (Das ist kaum zu glauben). With nicht it can also mean must not: Der Rasen ist nicht zu betreten. With separable verbs, zu goes between prefix and stem, in one word: einzureichen, auszufüllen. The subject of sein is the thing affected, and the verb agrees with it: Die Formulare sind auszufüllen.

sich lassen and adjectives in -bar, -lich, -fähig

Sich lassen + infinitive replaces a passive with können, never with müssen: Das Gerät lässt sich reparieren = Das Gerät kann repariert werden. Lassen is conjugated (lässt, ließ, hat sich ... lassen) and the infinitive stands at the end without zu. The same meaning is packed into adjectives: -bar is the most productive suffix, added to the stem of transitive verbs (machbar, lösbar, vermeidbar, unbezahlbar); -lich appears in established words (verständlich, erträglich, unvermeidlich); -fähig is added to nouns (ausbaufähig, transportfähig, mehrheitsfähig).

Modal passive substitutes

Substitutes without a modal meaning

Three more forms avoid the passive without adding must or can. Man + active verb: Man hat das Gebäude saniert = Das Gebäude wurde saniert. The reflexive, for processes where no agent is named: Das Buch verkauft sich gut; Die Tür öffnet sich. The bekommen-passive: the person in the dative becomes the subject, and the Partizip II goes to the end: Ihm wird das Buch geschenkt = Er bekommt das Buch geschenkt. Kriegen is the colloquial variant, erhalten the formal one. It only works with verbs that have a dative object for the receiver (schenken, schicken, erklären, überreichen).

  • Der Roman verkauft sich seit Monaten hervorragend. The novel has been selling extremely well for months.reflexive: English uses the plain verb
  • Die Teilnehmer bekamen die Unterlagen vorab zugeschickt. The participants were sent the documents in advance.bekommen + Partizip II; the receiver is the subject
  • Solche Fehler lassen sich vermeiden.Such mistakes can be avoided.lassen agrees with the plural subject
  • Die Frist ist unbedingt einzuhalten. The deadline must be observed without fail.sein + zu with a separable verb: einzuhalten

The gerundive: zu + Partizip I as an attribute

Put sein + zu in front of the noun and you get the gerundive (das Gerundiv): Das Problem ist zu lösen becomes das zu lösende Problem. Form: zu + Partizip I (infinitive + d) + adjective ending. It equals a relative clause with a modal passive: das Problem, das gelöst werden muss (or kann). With separable verbs, zu is built in: die einzureichenden Unterlagen. Like any participial attribute it can be extended to the left: die bis Freitag einzureichenden Unterlagen. It exists only for transitive verbs and belongs to formal written German.

Building the gerundive
StartDas Problem ist zu lösen.
zu + Partizip Izu lösend (infinitive + d)
Adjective endingzu lösende, before the noun
Resultdas zu lösende Problem

From gerundive to relative clause

GerundiveRelative clauseEnglish
das zu lösende Problemdas Problem, das gelöst werden mussthe problem to be solved
die einzureichenden Unterlagendie Unterlagen, die eingereicht werden müssenthe documents to be submitted
ein nicht zu unterschätzendes Risikoein Risiko, das nicht unterschätzt werden darfa risk not to be underestimated
der zu erwartende Anstiegder Anstieg, der erwartet werden kannthe increase to be expected
mit einer kaum zu bewältigenden Aufgabemit einer Aufgabe, die kaum bewältigt werden kannwith a task that can hardly be managed
Tip

To move between the forms, always pass through the modal passive. Ask: is it can or must? Can: kann gelöst werden = lässt sich lösen = ist zu lösen = ist lösbar. Must: muss gelöst werden = ist zu lösen = das zu lösende Problem. Sich lassen and -bar are never available for must.

Watch out

Do not confuse the zu of this structure with zu meaning too: Die Aufgabe ist zu lösen (must or can be solved) but Die Aufgabe ist zu schwer (too hard). Do not mix it up with haben + zu, which is active: Wir haben die Aufgabe zu lösen (we must solve it). And in the gerundive, do not forget the d of the Partizip I or use the Partizip II: das zu lösende Problem, not das zu lösene and not das zu gelöste Problem.
