Connectors for argumentation: indem, sofern, zumal, folglich, hingegen

Master the connectors that carry an argument in essays, articles and presentations: what each one means, whether it is a conjunction or an adverb, and where the verb goes after it.

Argumentation · Advanced · 30 min · 40 exercises · Goethe C1, College

At C1 you are expected to argue: to say how something is achieved, under which condition it holds, what follows from it, and where it must be qualified. German has a precise connector for each of these steps. Knowing the meaning is only half the work. The other half is the grammar: each connector is either a subordinating conjunction (verb at the end) or an adverb (verb directly after it, or the adverb inside the middle field). English however or consequently followed by a comma and normal word order is the model you must not copy.

Two types, two word orders

Subordinating conjunctions (indem, sofern, falls, zumal, wohingegen, wenngleich, soweit) send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause, and the clause is set off by a comma: Der Plan überzeugt, zumal er wenig kostet. Connecting adverbs (folglich, demnach, somit, infolgedessen, hingegen, vielmehr, allerdings, immerhin, gleichwohl, zudem) are sentence elements. In position 1 they are followed at once by the verb, with no comma: Folglich steigen die Preise. They can also stand in the middle field: Die Preise steigen folglich. A special case is es sei denn: it is followed by a comma and a normal main clause (es sei denn, es regnet) or by a dass-clause.

Fine distinctions

Indem names the means and usually corresponds to English by + -ing; do not confuse it with the relative in dem (das Haus, in dem ich wohne). Zumal does not give the main reason but adds a further, especially strong one. Es sei denn = unless: the main statement holds except in this one case. Wohingegen is a conjunction (verb last), hingegen an adverb that likes to stand right after the contrasted element: Die Löhne hingegen stagnieren. Vielmehr follows a negation and corrects it. Allerdings limits what was just said; immerhin saves something positive; ohnehin says it would be so in any case; gleichwohl and wenngleich are the formal relatives of trotzdem and obwohl.

Structuring an argument

A clear text announces its steps. Opening: zunächst (first of all). Adding: darüber hinaus, zudem, außerdem (beyond that, in addition). Last point: schließlich (finally). Conclusion: zusammenfassend (in summary), often in the formula Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass ... All of these are adverbials in position 1, so the verb follows immediately and there is no comma: Zudem fehlen verlässliche Daten.

  • Zunächst ist festzuhalten, dass die Zahlen nur vorläufig sind.First of all, it should be noted that the figures are only provisional.zunächst in position 1, verb second
  • Darüber hinaus fehlen Vergleichsdaten aus anderen Ländern.Beyond that, comparative data from other countries are missing.no comma after the adverbial
  • Zudem wurde die Stichprobe nicht zufällig ausgewählt, zumal nur Freiwillige teilnahmen. In addition, the sample was not chosen at random, especially since only volunteers took part.zumal: verb at the end
  • Die Ergebnisse sind folglich nur eingeschränkt übertragbar. The results can consequently be generalized only to a limited extent.folglich in the middle field
  • Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Studie wichtige Fragen aufwirft, wenngleich sie keine endgültigen Antworten liefert. In summary, one can say that the study raises important questions, although it does not provide final answers.wenngleich: formal although
Tip

When you learn a connector, learn it with a tiny sentence that shows its word order: zumal es regnet (verb last), folglich bleibt er (verb second), es sei denn, er kommt (main clause). The sentence will remind you of the type faster than any label.

Watch out

The most common mistake of English speakers is English punctuation and order after an adverb: not Folglich, die Preise steigen, but Folglich steigen die Preise. The second is treating an adverb as a conjunction (not: hingegen die Löhne stagnieren, but wohingegen die Löhne stagnieren) or the reverse (not: zumal ist es teuer, but zumal es teuer ist). The third is a verb-final clause after es sei denn: say es sei denn, es regnet.
