The passive in every tense, with modal verbs, and the Zustandspassiv
You extend the passive to the Perfekt, the Plusquamperfekt and the future, combine it with modal verbs, and learn to tell a process (wird geöffnet) from a result (ist geöffnet).
The passive · Upper intermediate · 25 min · 40 exercises · Goethe B2, AP German, College
At B1 you met the process passive (das Vorgangspassiv) in two tenses: Das Haus wird gebaut (is being built) and Das Haus wurde gebaut (was built). News reports, instructions, scientific texts and workplace emails need more: what has been done, what must be done, and what is done already. This lesson completes the picture.
The passive in the Perfekt, the Plusquamperfekt and the Futur I
The auxiliary werden forms its own Perfekt with sein, and in the passive its participle is shortened to worden (not geworden). Perfekt: ist gebaut worden. Plusquamperfekt: war gebaut worden. For the future, werden appears twice, once as the future auxiliary and once as the passive infinitive at the end: wird gebaut werden. In every tense the Partizip II of the main verb never changes.
The process passive in five tenses
| Tense | Form | English |
|---|---|---|
| Präsens | Das Haus wird gebaut. | The house is being built. |
| Präteritum | Das Haus wurde gebaut. | The house was built. |
| Perfekt | Das Haus ist gebaut worden. | The house has been built / was built. |
| Plusquamperfekt | Das Haus war gebaut worden. | The house had been built. |
| Futur I | Das Haus wird gebaut werden. | The house will be built. |
The passive with modal verbs
The modal verb is conjugated, and the sentence ends with the passive infinitive: Partizip II + werden. Die Rechnung muss bezahlt werden (must be paid). Only the modal changes with the tense: musste bezahlt werden (had to be paid), müsste bezahlt werden (would have to be paid). The Perfekt exists, hat bezahlt werden müssen, but it is heavy and rare: use the Präteritum of the modal instead. English speakers often forget werden: muss bezahlt alone is not a sentence.
Modal verbs + passive infinitive
| Tense | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Präsens | Die Rechnung muss bezahlt werden. | The bill must be paid. |
| Präsens | Der Fehler kann schnell korrigiert werden. | The mistake can be corrected quickly. |
| Präsens | Hier darf nicht geparkt werden. | Parking is not allowed here. |
| Präteritum | Die Rechnung musste bezahlt werden. | The bill had to be paid. |
| Konjunktiv II | Die Regeln müssten geändert werden. | The rules would have to be changed. |
| Perfekt (rare) | Die Rechnung hat bezahlt werden müssen. | The bill has had to be paid. |
Process or result? The Zustandspassiv
German separates two ideas that English often expresses with the same words. werden + Partizip II is the process: Das Fenster wird geöffnet (someone is opening it right now). sein + Partizip II is the result, the state after the action (das Zustandspassiv): Das Fenster ist geöffnet (it is open). In the past: Das Geschäft wurde um 18 Uhr geschlossen (they closed it at 6 p.m.) versus Das Geschäft war geschlossen (it was closed when I got there). The state passive normally has no agent and exists mainly in the Präsens and the Präteritum.
Vorgangspassiv: werden
- the process, the action
- Die Tür wird geschlossen.
- Die Tür wurde geschlossen.
- agent possible: von ...
Zustandspassiv: sein
- the result, the state
- Die Tür ist geschlossen.
- Die Tür war geschlossen.
- normally no agent
Von or durch?
The agent, the person or institution that acts, is introduced by von + dative: Der Artikel wurde von einer Journalistin geschrieben. The means, the cause or an intermediary is introduced by durch + accusative: Der Strom wurde durch einen Sturm unterbrochen; Die Nachricht wurde durch die Medien verbreitet. An instrument takes mit + dative: Der Brief wurde mit der Hand geschrieben. English says by in the first two cases, so check: who did it (von), or what caused it or carried it (durch)?
Examples
- Die Brücke ist letztes Jahr renoviert worden. The bridge was renovated last year.Perfekt: ist + Partizip II + worden
- Als wir ankamen, war die Entscheidung schon getroffen worden. When we arrived, the decision had already been made.Plusquamperfekt
- Die neue Bibliothek wird im Herbst eröffnet werden. The new library will be opened in the fall.Futur I; the Präsens (wird eröffnet) is also common with a time expression
- Die Daten müssen bis Freitag ausgewertet werden. The data must be analyzed by Friday.modal + Partizip II + werden
- Das Labor ist seit Montag geschlossen. The lab has been closed since Monday.a state: sein + Partizip II
- Die Studie wurde von einem Team aus Basel durchgeführt. The study was carried out by a team from Basel.agent: von + dative
In a subordinate clause, the conjugated verb goes to the very end, after everything else in the passive group. The order is: Partizip II, then werden or worden, then the conjugated verb. Ich weiß, dass das Haus 1990 gebaut wurde. Ich weiß, dass das Haus gebaut worden ist. Ich weiß, dass das Haus gebaut werden muss. Read the group from right to left and you get the English order: must be built.
Three traps. (1) worden or geworden? In the passive it is always worden: Das Haus ist gebaut worden. Geworden is the participle of werden when it means to become: Sie ist Ärztin geworden. (2) The Perfekt of the passive takes sein, never haben: not hat gebaut worden. (3) The English is closed can be a process or a state. Die Tür wird geschlossen means someone is closing it; Die Tür ist geschlossen means it is shut. And Das Haus ist gebaut never means is being built.
