English shows possession with 's (my father's car) or with of (the end of the movie). German has a special case for this job: the genitive (der Genitiv). You will meet it in every newspaper article, in formal letters and in the Goethe B1 exam, and you need it after a small group of very common prepositions such as wegen (because of) and trotz (in spite of).
The forms: des + -s, or der
Masculine and neuter nouns take the article des (or eines, meines) and the noun itself adds -s or -es: der Vater, des Vaters; das Kind, des Kindes. Feminine and plural nouns take der (or einer, meiner) and the noun does not change: die Lehrerin, der Lehrerin; die Kinder, der Kinder. All the ein-words (dein, sein, ihr, unser, kein) and dieser follow the same pattern: seines Bruders, ihrer Mutter, dieses Jahres.
The genitive at a glance
| Gender | der-word | ein-word | Possessive | Noun ending | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| masculine | des | eines | meines | -s or -es | das Auto des Vaters |
| neuter | des | eines | meines | -s or -es | das Spielzeug des Kindes |
| feminine | der | einer | meiner | no ending | die Tasche der Lehrerin |
| plural | der | (use von + dative) | meiner | no ending | die Eltern der Kinder |
Masculine and neuter
- des, eines, meines
- noun + -s or -es
- des Vaters, des Kindes
Feminine and plural
- der, einer, meiner
- noun: no ending
- der Mutter, der Kinder
-s or -es? And the word order
Short nouns of one syllable usually take -es: des Mannes, des Kindes, des Jahres, des Tages. Nouns that end in -s, -ß, -x or -z must take -es: des Hauses, des Platzes. Longer nouns take a simple -s: des Lehrers, des Computers, des Mädchens, des Wetters. The word order is the opposite of the English 's: first the thing, then the owner. das Auto meines Vaters is literally „the car of my father“.
Possession with the genitive
- Das ist das Auto meines Vaters.That is my father's car.masculine: meines + Vater + s
- Die Wohnung meiner Schwester ist klein, aber hell.My sister's apartment is small but bright.feminine: meiner, no ending on the noun
- Kennst du den Titel des Films?Do you know the title of the movie?masculine: des + Film + s
- Die Eltern der Kinder warten vor der Schule. The children's parents are waiting in front of the school.plural: der, no ending
- Am Ende des Jahres machen wir eine Reise nach Zürich. At the end of the year we are taking a trip to Zurich.neuter, one syllable: des Jahres
- Wessen Fahrrad steht vor der Tür? Das ist Leons Fahrrad.Whose bike is in front of the door? That is Leon's bike.wessen = whose; a name simply adds -s
Names, von + dative, and the question word wessen
A proper name adds -s without an apostrophe and stands before the noun, just like in English: Annas Buch, Leons Fahrrad, Deutschlands Städte. If the name ends in -s, -ß, -x or -z, write only an apostrophe (Thomas' Fahrrad, Max' Hund) or use von. In everyday speech Germans often replace the genitive with von + dative: das Auto von meinem Vater, die Tasche von der Lehrerin. This is fine when you talk, but in writing and in exams the genitive is expected. To ask about the owner, use wessen (whose): Wessen Tasche ist das?
Prepositions that take the genitive
| Preposition | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| wegen | because of | Wegen des Regens bleiben wir zu Hause. |
| trotz | in spite of, despite | Trotz des Regens gehen wir spazieren. |
| während | during | Während der Ferien arbeitet er in einem Café. |
| statt, anstatt | instead of | Statt eines Autos kauft sie ein Fahrrad. |
| innerhalb | within, inside | Innerhalb einer Woche bekommen Sie eine Antwort. |
| außerhalb | outside (of) | Wir wohnen außerhalb der Stadt. |
The adjective after a genitive article: always -en
Good news: after any genitive article (des, der, eines, einer, meines, meiner) the adjective ends in -en, in every gender and in the plural. trotz des schlechten Wetters, das Auto meines älteren Bruders, während der langen Reise, die Namen der neuen Schüler.
Genitive prepositions with adjectives
- Wegen des schlechten Wetters fährt heute kein Schiff.Because of the bad weather no boat is running today.wegen + genitive, adjective in -en
- Trotz der vielen Hausaufgaben geht Mia zum Training. In spite of all the homework, Mia goes to practice.plural: der vielen Hausaufgaben
- Während des langen Fluges habe ich zwei Filme gesehen.During the long flight I watched two movies.masculine: des langen Fluges
- Statt eines neuen Handys wünscht er sich ein Fahrrad.Instead of a new cell phone he wants a bike.neuter: eines neuen Handys
- Außerhalb der großen Städte gibt es weniger Busse.Outside the big cities there are fewer buses.plural: der großen Städte
- Innerhalb eines Monats hat sie eine neue Stelle gefunden.Within a month she found a new job.masculine: eines Monats
Remember the genitive as two teams. Team s: masculine and neuter, where the article ends in -s and the noun ends in -s too (des Vaters, eines Kindes). Team r: feminine and plural, where the article ends in -r and the noun stays as it is (der Mutter, meiner Freunde). You will also hear wegen with the dative in casual speech (wegen dem Regen), but write the genitive.
Three typical mistakes of English speakers. First, no apostrophe: write Annas Buch, never Anna's Buch. Second, only names go in front; with an article the owner comes second: das Auto meines Vaters, not meines Vaters Auto. Third, do not forget the ending on the masculine or neuter noun: des Lehrers, not des Lehrer. And never add -s to a feminine noun: der Mutter, not der Mutters.
