Pronouns
das unpersönliche es
In English: impersonal es (it)
The pronoun es used as a subject that refers to nothing in particular: with the weather, the time, feelings and fixed expressions such as es gibt and es geht. German needs it because a sentence must have a subject.
Example: Es regnet. Es gibt heute Suppe. (It is raining. There is soup today.)
