In English: pronoun
A word that stands for a noun so that you do not have to repeat it. A German pronoun takes the gender and number of the noun it replaces and the case required by its job in the sentence.
Example: Wo ist der Schlüssel? Er liegt auf dem Tisch. (Where is the key? It is on the table.)
