die Umgangssprache
In English: colloquial language (everyday spoken German)
The relaxed German of everyday conversation. Typical features: shortened forms (ich hab, 'ne, geht's), the Perfekt instead of the Präteritum, and many modal particles such as doch, mal, halt. Fine in speech and messages to friends, but not in an exam essay or a formal letter.
Example: Ich hab gerade keine Zeit, komm doch mal später vorbei.
