In English: dative object (indirect object)
The object in the dative: usually the person who receives something or benefits from the action. It answers the question wem? English often uses „to“ or „for“; German just uses the dative, with no preposition.
Example: Ich schreibe meiner Oma eine Karte. (Wem schreibe ich?)
