Two-part connectors (zweiteilige Konnektoren) are pairs such as both ... and, either ... or, the more ... the better. They make your German sound structured, which is exactly what examiners look for in B2 essays and presentations. Each pair has its own meaning, and each one has its own rules for the position of the verb.

What they join

A two-part connector can join two words or phrases inside one clause (Sie spricht sowohl Englisch als auch Spanisch) or two complete clauses (Entweder kommst du mit, oder du bleibst hier). When only words or phrases are joined, the word order of the sentence does not change and no comma is needed, except before sondern and aber, which always take a comma. When two full clauses are joined, separate them with a comma and watch the position of the verb in each half.

The seven pairs and their meaning

What the pairs mean

A and B

  • sowohl A als auch B
  • nicht nur A, sondern auch B

A or B

  • entweder A oder B
  • one of the two

not A, not B

  • weder A noch B
  • no extra nicht or kein

Verb position when two clauses are joined

The two halves behave like the word classes you already know. Sondern, oder and aber are coordinating conjunctions in position 0: the subject and then the verb follow. Noch, einerseits and andererseits are adverbs: in position 1 they are followed directly by the verb, then the subject. Entweder and zwar can open the sentence (then the verb usually follows them) or stand in the middle field. Je works like a subordinating conjunction: the verb goes to the end.

Je ... desto: proportion

English says the more ..., the better. German uses je + comparative in a subordinate clause (verb at the end), then desto or umso + comparative in the main clause, followed directly by the verb and then the subject: Je mehr man liest, desto größer wird der Wortschatz. The comparative always stays right after je and after desto, and a noun can travel with it: Je mehr Erfahrung man hat, desto bessere Chancen hat man. The je-clause normally comes first, and a comma separates the two parts.

Je ... desto and je ... umso

  • Je öfter du Deutsch sprichst, desto sicherer fühlst du dich. The more often you speak German, the more confident you feel.German has no word like more before the adjective: sicherer

Agreement of the verb

When a two-part connector joins two subjects, the verb form follows the meaning. Sowohl ... als auch adds two subjects, so the verb is normally plural: Sowohl der Direktor als auch seine Stellvertreterin nehmen an der Sitzung teil. With weder ... noch the plural is usual as well: Weder der Direktor noch seine Stellvertreterin haben Zeit (the singular hat is also accepted). With entweder ... oder and nicht nur ... sondern auch the verb agrees with the nearest subject: Entweder der Direktor oder seine Stellvertreterin kommt. Nicht nur die Schüler, sondern auch die Lehrerin war überrascht.

Tip

Learn each pair as a formula: sowohl A als auch B = A + B; weder A noch B = not A and not B; entweder A oder B = A or B; zwar A, aber B = A is true, yet B counts more. In an essay, einerseits ... andererseits is the simplest way to present the advantages and disadvantages of a question.

Watch out

Typical mistakes of English speakers. 1. Translating both ... and with beide ... und: German needs sowohl ... als auch. 2. Adding a second negation: say Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld, not weder Zeit noch kein Geld, because weder ... noch is already negative. 3. Copying English word order after desto: not desto die Chancen sind besser, but desto besser sind die Chancen. 4. Forgetting the comparative: je mehr, desto besser, never je viel.
