English makes a sentence negative with not, no, or the helper do: I do not come, I have no time, I don't have a car. German has no helper like do. It uses two words: kein in front of certain nouns, and nicht for everything else. The choice is not free, so learn the test below.
Kein: the negative of ein
Use kein to negate a noun that has ein / eine or no article at all in the positive sentence. Think of it as k + ein: it replaces ein and takes the same endings. Ich habe ein Auto becomes Ich habe kein Auto. Ich habe Zeit becomes Ich habe keine Zeit. Kein means no, not a, not any.
The forms of kein
| Gender | Nominative | Accusative |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | kein Hund | keinen Hund |
| Feminine | keine Katze | keine Katze |
| Neuter | kein Auto | kein Auto |
| Plural | keine Kinder | keine Kinder |
Kein in action
- Das ist kein Problem. That is not a problem.ein Problem becomes kein Problem
- Wir haben keine Zeit.We have no time.no article in the positive sentence: Wir haben Zeit
- Ich habe keinen Hunger.I am not hungry.der Hunger, accusative: keinen
- Sie trinkt keine Milch. She does not drink milk.die Milch: keine
- Er hat keine Geschwister. He has no brothers or sisters.plural: keine
Nicht: for everything else
Use nicht to negate a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a name, or a noun with the definite article der / die / das. Ich komme nicht. Das Haus ist nicht groß. Das ist nicht der Lehrer. Never put nicht between the subject and the verb: the verb keeps position 2.
Where nicht goes
When nicht negates the whole sentence, it goes to the end of the clause: Ich kaufe das Buch nicht. Time words like heute and morgen also come before it: Ich arbeite heute nicht. But nicht stands before an adjective, an adverb such as gern, gut, oft or hier, a prepositional phrase, and any single element you want to negate.
At the end
- negates the whole sentence
- Ich verstehe das nicht.
- Ich arbeite heute nicht.
Before the element
- adjective: nicht warm
- adverb: nicht gern
- preposition: nicht in Köln
- one element: nicht heute
The position of nicht
| What is negated | Position of nicht | Example |
|---|---|---|
| The whole sentence | at the end of the clause | Ich verstehe das nicht. |
| An adjective | before the adjective | Die Suppe ist nicht warm. |
| An adverb (gern, gut, oft, hier) | before the adverb | Er liest nicht gern. |
| A prepositional phrase | before the preposition | Wir wohnen nicht in Köln. |
| One particular element | right before that element | Sie kommt nicht heute, sie kommt morgen. |
Nicht in action
- Ich schlafe nicht.I am not sleeping.no helper like do or am in German
- Wir kaufen das Auto nicht. We are not buying the car.noun with das: nicht, at the end
- Das Wetter ist nicht schön.The weather is not nice.before the adjective
- Tobias kocht nicht oft.Tobias does not cook often.before the adverb
- Jana kommt nicht aus Wien.Jana does not come from Vienna.before the prepositional phrase
- Das ist nicht Paul. That is not Paul.before a name
Doch: yes to a negative question
German has three short answers. After a positive question, answer ja or nein: Kommst du? Ja, ich komme. After a negative question, use doch to contradict it and say yes: Kommst du nicht? Doch, ich komme. Hast du keinen Hunger? Doch, ich habe Hunger. To agree with the negative, say nein: Nein, ich komme nicht.
Do not mix up nicht (not) and nichts (nothing). Ich esse nicht means I am not eating. Ich esse nichts means I am eating nothing. The extra s makes it a thing: nichts answers the question was?
English speakers often write Ich habe nicht ein Auto, a word-for-word copy of I do not have a car. With ein or no article, German needs kein: Ich habe kein Auto. Also forget the English do: Ich wohne nicht in Berlin, with the verb in position 2 and nicht after it.
