die Modalpartikel

In English: modal particle (flavoring word)

A small unstressed word, typical of spoken German, that shows the attitude of the speaker: doch, ja, mal, eben, halt, wohl. It often has no direct English translation and makes a sentence sound friendlier, more surprised or more insistent.

Example: Komm doch mal her! (Come over here, will you?)
